Working with audio | Why ‘Fireworks’ is super catchy and popular

Pro Production Masterclass | Logic Pro X | Julian Hinton (Stormzy, Rod Stewart, Seal, The RPO, Laura Welsh, Trevor Horn, Don Black...)

I’m gonna read you some lyrics.  You may or may not know them, but if you don’t know them  after I’ve read them to you, I think you’re gonna be surprised when I press play  on the song.

Okay,  here we go.  Do you ever feel like a plastic bag  drifting through the wind? Wanting to start again?  Do you ever feel,  feel so paper thin  like a house of cards,  one blow from caving in.  Do you ever feel already buried deep,  six feet under screams, but no one seems to hear a thing?

Do you know there’s still a chance for you? ’cause there’s a spark in you.  Then we get a bit more pop.  You just gotta ignite the light and let it shine. Own the night, like the 4th of July. ’cause baby, I’m a fan work.  a Olivia’s saying get played all the time in our home. Yes, the kids love it. That and raw, constantly. Alexa play Fine work by Katy Perry.

however, it was one of those things which is in the car on the way home. And I absolutely just zoned in on the lyrics. I just thought, you know,  does that have to be so good? Do you ever feel like a plastic bag drifting through the wind? Wanting to start again? Okay, maybe the start again, it’s slightly obtuse and it’s meaning, but feel like a plastic bag. I love the fact asking me a question, asking me something odd. Reeling me in first line of the song.

Do you ever feel like a bastic bag? no.  But carry on. In this case, Katie,  drifting through the wind, wanting to start again. Do you ever feel, feels so paper thin? I mean, that’s what a lovely turn of phrase. It’s beautiful. Do you ever  like a house of cards? One blow from caving in? I mean, that’s just lovely. It,  it, it, you know, it just, it’s so beautifully crafted. It’s so distinctive. It sounds  not poetic.

It sounds  like something else of a novel.  You know,  it’s, it’s so inspired to me. do you know there’s still a chance for you? ’cause there’s a spark in you.  I love the fact that going through the verse, asking a question,  kind of giving an answer, expanding on the question, imagery, house of cards  buried deep, six feet under, no one seems to hear a thing.  Bit of darkness there, but intrigue.

And then do you know there’s still a chance for you? ’cause there’s a spark in you getting to the point.  You’ve just gotta ignite the light, let it shine,  own the night.  See, I mean, super analytical here. You just gotta ignite the light and let it shine.  Could we be going ever so slightly more mainstream, more normal, let it shine? Well, it’s a bit cheesy, but let’s bring it back. Own the night,  like the 4th of July.

And it’s one of those things that lands, you kind of go, oh, 4th of July. Yeah, I know that  that links it in with a firework concept. And then you’ve just got your great chorus.  Show ’em what you’re worth. Make ’em go, oh,  oh, oh,  shoot. Across the sky. You’re a firework. Colors burst.  You’re gonna leave them in.  Or, or, or, which actually, until I read this, I never understood that was quite what she was saying. Or, or, or I sort of, I, I I kind of heard Oh, oh, oh.

But either, either way,  just, I mean,  if you’re looking for craft, if you’re looking for inspiration, if you’re looking for it in a slap, you know, mainstream hit massive tune.  Kids love it. Adults love it. You can sing along with it. you may think it’s sort of like cheesy,  fizzy pop, but  it’s just so much better than it needs to be.  And I, and I think that’s the little lesson I come away, I i I take away from it, which is  sometimes you can think, okay, I’m going a bit too close to poetry, but this makes me think that a lyric’s right around the corner,  a lyric is, can feel poetic, but it’s,  it’s like the poetry has been  just crafted ever since.

Slightly differently to have a sense of craft left in the lyric. Are still telling a story till asked, still asking questions, still saying  really sort of normal human things. Just but in an interesting way.
