Where to find cool and current sounds for your production

Producer Masterclass | Will Simms (Black Eyed Peas, Eve, VIZE X Papa Roach, Aloe Blacc, Loona, Red Velvet, EXO, Timmy Trumpet ...) and Martin Sutton (Céline Dion, Cliff Richard, Lena, LeAnn Rimes ...)

Do you have your go-to plugins? Do you have instruments so you absolutely won’t touch ’cause you think, oh no, they’re too dated. Yeah. Or, or do you go to ’em because they’re dated? You know, what’s, how, how do you go about choosing the right instrument for any given song? You know, it’s,  I, I really don’t know. It’s a, it’s a really tricky one, just how I feel on the day. Literally. I, I used to, one thing that I used to do, which I used to love to do because it inspires me, is before I start producing something, unless I already know that I’ve got the sounds that I’m looking for, I, you know, I used to say, I used to go to a studio, listen to a lot of records, and I used to sample like the drum sounds of the records or little interesting sounds like little hits, just one thing.

And I used to just  sample a load of new sounds and then I’d put them all on the keyboard, basically.  Like put it in my sample, put it on the keyboard, and then I would start jamming like this. Yeah, because new sounds, fresh sounds that I haven’t got in my computer yet, but I just put in and I just play.

They inspire me,  you know, to do something new. Whereas if I keep going to the things that I have on my computer, I don’t get inspired that much. I get stuck. I, I really have to constantly find inspiration, have new sounds, basically that, that’s what I do. And do you still use Analog Kit? Yeah, I do. Sometimes more. Well, the only thing that I use that’s analog really, is I’ve got a No Lead too, which is a, a keyboard, with, with some really cool sounds on it. And so when I plug this one in, I don’t plug it into media either.

I just like plug it into audio and I  record a lot of the little percussions and sounds  from that keyboard into my productions now. Because it just gives a different feel. It just gives a little analog feel that you might not necessarily hear, but it’s a feel. I know it’s there, it makes me feel better. And so I can only imagine that it will make, you know, other people feel better. Okay. Let’s, let’s move on to, yeah. You, you’ve talked a lot about beat creation. Yeah.

So  again, do you have your, your, your, your bank of loops that you go to? Or do you prefer using individual hits?  Is it a combination? What, What’s yes, combination And where, where do you, where do you find them? Where, where are the cool beats these days? Young man, The cool beats are, well first of all, they’re in your heads.  The cool beats, they’re in the head. but to be able to get the cool sounds, there, I think I told last time, there is a really good like website right now, a  thing called Yeah, splice.

Exactly where you can go and you subscribe and they give you like constant, constant, like, constantly. They give you new sounds, fresh sounds that are produced and crafted in a, in, in sort ways for modern music specifically. So I do like to go on there and, download a lot of things at once. And then again, I will put them on my keyboard or just like loops, put them in my, I’ll just go through it and play.

And sometimes you’ll just hear a loop. Actually, I’ll play you something later that I did just on splice. I went on Splice and there was this new pack and I heard these freaking sounds a loop already made loop. And I thought, this, this is awesome. Like, this is, this is a record already,  just one loop. So I put the loop in my thing and I wrote the whole song on that. And then I put the drums to it. fire out. Alright, alright. Yeah, yeah. Go for it. So that’s really funny ’cause ’cause as much as I, I love to play and create and do my own stuff, sometimes it’s, you know, I get inspired by other, you know, people playing.

And so, how I got it here,  Baba. All right, so this is, this is the version without the, without the song  and the Loop, that particular loop on Splice, Where are you, where are you?  That’s the, That I heard  so by that.

 Anyway, there you go.

Alright, thank you.  So, so, so that’s su that’s super rough, right? So it’s a loop, but this loop inspired this. It’s not necessarily a great song that we wanted, but it’s a vibe. So we it  Youre so bad, but so good.

So my,  It goes on, it goes on.

It’s like I said, it’s not necessarily a great song, but  the Loop inspired me to just want to do something with it, to write something. And now I hear it again. And it’s funny because I hear the song now and I’m like, you know what? No. I wanna write a different song to this.  So, wow. There you go.  Yes.  Yeah. It’s, one of my Go-to plugins. I’ve talked to you, quite a few of you about this. Is, is Nexus  Mm-Hmm. made by REFX Nexus two.

the great thing about Nexus, I mean, it, it comes with your, your your regular pack, but, but it, there’s constantly add on packs, expansion packs for it, which you, you I love that. I know,  I know. It’s sort of, yeah, I be your bank manager know as well.  It’s, but, but it’s great because they, they, they constantly keep up to date on, on,  on, the, the additional packs that they give you. And so you get that constant inspiration and there’s loads of arpeggiated, little sort of like portions like this, you know, that you can like, create a whole song on.

And, you know, from my point of view, I came from a background of, of being the bus, standing there with a, with a guitar. And,  and now it’s very, very common for me to not just write with a guitar unless I’m forced to, unless I’m in a situation where that’s all I’ve got. I’ll definitely sit in the studio and I’ll start bringing loops, start with loops or start bringing loops into the, into the production.
