Q: I would love to hear if you have any tips on writing melodies when the singer is not in the room.
How do you know, what is singable? Do you write with the artist in mind? The answer is, I always, I, I write, I write for the song. Okay. I don’t always think of the artist. I didn’t think of Emman cr when I wrote Lonely People, I thought of the song. Okay. Of course, the singer John Adams, who’s an amazing singer, was, was kind of the person in the room. but I, when I’m writing melodies, they come outta my fingers.
Okay. You know, when I, when I wrote, you know, I literally, I was playing when I did never saw blue like that. I was just sitting at the piano With no singer, just playing the melody. So, to answer your question, I, my tip for writing is whatever you, whatever works for you, okay? For me, I’m a piano. I’m not a singer. The, the, the, the, the melodies come through my fingers.
If you’re a singer, just let it, let that happen. Let that, you know, let, let that, and, and you don’t always have to have a singer in the room. Preferably, I like to have the singer ’cause it helps inspire a melody. But a lot of times the, the, the melody comes from in my heart.
