Tea Break Tip: Breaking out of a rut

Pro Songwriting Masterclass | Martin Sutton (Céline Dion, Olivia Newton-John, Cliff Richard, Lena, Garou, LeAnn Rimes ...)

Often we can  make excuses for what we do or what we don’t do. But a rut for me is just another name for a comfort zone  where we end up playing the same thing. We end up writing about the same kind of vibe.  We end up playing the same kind of genre of music, listening to the same genre of music.  And it’s just a place where we feel safe.

And I know that we all have our  things. I know that we have our preferences,  but sometimes those preferences can become a bit of a boundary to stop us moving into other things,  which can influence us in a very, very positive way. Those things we’re missing out on. So I believe a rut is just a comfort zone. It’s not deep at all. All we have to do is just step out of it.  Why else?

How else do we get in a rut? Well,  we get lazy  and we blame our habits  on something external. Often this happens. I’ve seen it happen many, many times.  People will give me a number of reasons why they think they’ve got writer’s block,  why they think they’re just doing the same thing over and over again. And they’ll say, well, you know, the, I’ve just seemed to have lost my mojo. Or they’ll say, you know, there’s been a lot going on.

But  you know what?  If you prioritise music, if you are passionate about music, and I don’t mean spending hours a day making music, but just having it playing in your head.  If you, if you’re passionate about it and you allow it  to come through,  then it will come through  99% of the time. The thing that gets in the way of a songwriter  between a songwriter and success is the songwriter themselves.
