So what are we gonna be doing today? we’re gonna look at Logic’s drummer, and it’s sort of auto drumming capacity.
Logic Drummer works with the arrangement. So I’ve got intro verse, pre-chorus and chorus written here. All right? And I, what I want to do is I want to show you how to add all those in. All right? so, I’m just going to suspend connect content, connection, and I’m going to delete all of these ’cause I wanna put them in in a little while.
All right? I can show you something else. So let’s go to new drama track, okay? And it’s created me a region. All right, let’s just listen to that essentially. Now, this is not an audio region or a MIDI region. It’s sort of a visual representation of half and half looks a bit like audio actually.
but it’s, it’s spiking doing the same kind of thing. Let’s just press play A bit loud, sorry. Okay, so that is a drum pattern, alright? And, this is open or this has opened itself up already. If it hasn’t, we’ve got obviously our browse a library button or command l shortcut for me, just to those newbies.
I’ve got a lot of my own shortcuts. you might have standard logic shortcuts or you might have made your own as well. The, the, as a h as you see as I hover over the library, my shortcut there, command L has appeared. Whatever your, on your computer it is, it will be there. Yours will say that as well. So that’s handy if you forget a shortcut if you like, can’t remember it’s written there. Alright? Now, what’s the concept of this drummer track? Well, basically Apple decided to try and create a sort of virtual drummer, and they recorded lots of drummers, whether they were called as written here, Kyle, Logan, and as Max Jesse and Ian.
We’ve got on Kyle here. Now, the first thing I’m going to just gonna say to you is, is that, what the style that you want your drummer to play in is here. If I click, if I click that here, you’ve got different styles, rock, alternative songwriter, r and b, electronic hip hop, and percussion, excuse me.
so the first thing you want to do when using Logics drummer is decide what kind of style. Now, mine is not a rock track, it’s a sort of a country songwriter kind of thing. so I’m going to click songwriter, oh, songwriter here. What I will encourage you to do, I’m going through this relatively briefly, I’m not going to go through all these different drummers.
You can though, just go through all these things. In fact, I’ll give you, I’ll, I will, I’ll give you a quick example. Move this region here, this drumming region to the beginning of your song, okay? And I’m just going to give you an example of how powerful o strummer is. Okay? Let me just cycle the first four bars of something now.
Then what you can do is you can now start to just play around and as you click through the genres, and then also through the different types of songwriters, sorry, different types of drummers and here, Levi, Darcy, Graham, Mason Parker, et cetera. They all have different kind of sounds of kits and different kind of sounds of playing styles. So it is, it’s like having loads of drummers at your disposal doing things. And when you’re trying to work on a song, you’re trying to be creative quickly, get some inspiration, have something that works.
This is pretty darn close to having somebody in front of you where you go. Can you not play that there? Or can you do that there or a bit. Can you play a bit louder, a bit more on the chorus? You know, it’s sort of a, this is very close to a virtual setup in many ways, and to a degree as well, more flexible because you can fiddle with through the cows come home rather than if you get a session with a real player. What they play is essentially what you’ve got.
I’m gonna press play and you are going to hear in the songwriter genre. Let’s go. Darcy. Darcy is playing the pop songwriter, tasteful, restrained and dedicated to serving the song. Darcy plays simple tasteful pop beats on a natural sounding kit. Well, that’s brilliant. That might suit the song. let’s press play and see what Darcy as a first go hears what to play on this song.
Okay? What I’m gonna now show you is, is that as I flick through here, the drummers and the stars are gonna change. So that was very plain, possibly a bit too much for that part of the song, but we’ll talk about how to change that in a minute.
Press play again. I’m gonna flick around and you’ll see how powerful this is. Oh, it takes a while to catch up sometimes. Let’s try a different genre just for the hell of it.
Let’s go for electronic. Ah, that’s a different vibe, isn’t it? So it can be really inspirational if you are creating a backing track for something, this suddenly lends itself to a very different style. Julian, it’s me, it’s not me. Anyways, obviously not really these styles.
Let’s try alternative garage rocks. So I’m just flicking down here. Indie disco. It’s quite nice. And of course when you’re hearing all these things as well, Nikki, indie disco, I like that sounds, it does sound indie disco. I like the sense when it bear it’s warm. Make that go into your brain.
Everything you hearing in logic, save it memory. If you need a notebook, write it down. You know, there are ways of saving we’ve talked about before as well, in terms of these kits and these sounds as well. so, but you know, your brain is the best thing. Just your go-to things that inspire that you really like. So I, I might come back to that. I could think about if I just solo that a second. Quite like that.
I quite like that. I, I’m hearing something else over that. So, you know, it’s in, in, in doing a silly investigation, I found something that I really liked. now then let’s go back to the something that caught my ear songwriter. Oh, where is it? It’s the brushes thing actually Now it’s not doing quite what I want it to do, but the sound of the kit and the brushes kind of thing is doing roughly what I want.
Okay? So once, so you are looking for a sort of a sense, an overall vibe straight initially Austin in his roots brush pattern is my initial vibe. Okay? albeit not quite right now, let’s get into talking about how to change that. Okay? and I’m gonna show you that. Then here we go. If I click on the region here, it will activate this interface here. And what are all these?
Well, on the left hand side we’ve got, as it says, beat presets. Okay? And let’s flick through them. At the moment we’re on flatbed, let’s press play and I’ll flick through a bit too busy, not right, okay, that’s barrow, which is nice.
Too much now. Ah, That’s kind of there. It’s got, it’s got this right kind of bareness for that part of the song. But, but, but, but again, I’ll say it’s got the right kind of sonic and vibe to it.
Okay? So the first thing you can do, which is great, is look at these beat presets. And there again, a great starting point. we’ve got a little settings button here as well. we can save that. we can refresh the region. that will take it back to its sort of default state, the pattern that we’re having because we can fiddle with this pattern. If we fiddle with it and end up with something not as good as the first thing that we liked, we can always go back there, refresh region, keep settings when changing.
