How HUGE commercial track ‘Click My Fingers’ came about

Producer Masterclass | Will Simms (Black Eyed Peas, Eve, VIZE X Papa Roach, Aloe Blacc, Loona, Red Velvet, EXO, Timmy Trumpet ...)

It started on a, on a sunny day. my mother was, no, I’m joking. So  literally I  was working with this guy. He was only our second session, he’s called Danisha songwriter, really freaking great songwriter. He’s got a lot of stuff out and coming out. You should really shake him out. and what we did together, so we,  we literally got into the studio and what we like to do when we work is before we even write a song,  is we like to speak just about life.

Like, about how we are  right now, what’s going on. You know,  what, what the hell are we gonna do, you know, like in life, not, not in music. It’s just like, dude, you know, s**t, what, what are we gonna do about this situation? And what’s going on? What’s going on with your girl? What’s going on with your heart? You know, your love life, your this or that, you know, typical stuff that people talk about. and  we let that first of all guide where we are gonna go.

’cause we refuse when we’re together to write a song that’s not gonna be relevant to what we’re going through. So he told me about his, his girlfriend and, her mother who was diagnosed with cancer. and how basically it was really tough and he wished that he could click his fingers sometimes and make everything all right for her. And she was being really strong and she would hide it like an act. You know, she sometimes he felt like she was like an actress. She could hide, you know, certain things like pain and everything.

And these are all words that were just a genuine conversation that ended up  into the song. There’s nothing like a conversation, you know,  becomes a real song. I think that’s, so this first all, that’s how we started.  And as we were talking about all this stuff, I had this little sound, which I’ve, I’ve sampled now, which have sort of bounced, I mean, which is part of this thing called Excel, which I told you about, which is a vocal engine thing. And so I was like, literally we were talking and  I was on my keyboard and I was listening to him and I was, and I was going, blah, blah.

And I was playing this,  Just this, it’s 1, 1 2 keys, one  Like this. I was just doing this, not thinking,  and he picks up the guitar, the acoustic guitar,  and he starts playing some chord over it.  And by this time we are still talking, right? We are not really thinking, we’re not starting work yet.

It’s just like, well, we don’t think we’ve started work, but obviously we have, and you know, we’re almost in tears and everything. His situation, I was going through a similar thing. It was just like, oh my god. So,  and he plays these chords and he starts playing this  on top of it, just  so I’m like this and we’re talking, blah. Like, and I can’t believe it. And he’s just in the background going And  we’re talking. So it’s like, yeah, dude.  So, you know, what are we gonna do and  gonna move to Swedish? She’s gonna do all stuff.

And I, you know, I dunno what to do. I gotta, you know,  and we, we, we then we’re in three minutes we’re realizing this and I’m just like,  you know what, dude, can we just,  just, let’s just record that guitar, like right now, like in the room. Like mic it. It’s like we mic the acoustic guitar just  properly, like, not even in a proper way, not thinking, where are we gonna mic it? Where are we gonna just f*****g stay on the sofa? I’m gonna bring the mic. You just stay there. You just carry on doing don’t stop for nothing.

Just carry on doing what you’re doing. Oh, this thing’s annoying me. All on. Let me, just turn off your wireless. Yeah, there you go. so we record the guitar, and so you can hear in the guitar, because I, I still had the speakers on and everything, and you can hear the, in the background  instead of the,  the sound I was playing. So we, we record the guitar to that sound. and basically, yeah, it went on, it developed and the, the preor, so we were there, God  damn. And so suddenly he starts  singing.

He just says, if only I could click my fingers, you know, basically what we’ve just been said.  And so at that point I’m like, okay, well obviously this is how we’re gonna start the song. There’s nothing else, you know, that we’re gonna start the song with. So with that, so that’s it. And we developed the song and he said everything that we were talking about, he turned it into a  freaking  a melody basically in a song. And we recorded it. We recorded it just on the guitar, which was, so this is just the, the instrumental arrangement, by the way, because I do things where at the end of my sessions have instrumental arrangement and then a separate vocal arrangements just because everything is clearer and I can focus on things in different way.

So  we had that and we recorded the whole song and it was just guitar that sound vocal. And then on the second verse, I put, at the time, this absolutely atrocious rubbish, kinda like halftime freaking hip hop beat.

Think it should go into something a bit like, Timberland kind of vibe, you know?  And it just really wasn’t working. But  I was like, the song is so I f*****g love this song. And it’s just, it means so much to him and to me right now. And it’s just like, okay. And so at the end of the day, I’m like, dude, I just gotta try something. Like, so, you know, ’cause this is not going anywhere, but we can’t give up on this. Like, we can’t give up on this song. There’s no way we’re gonna do, do that.

And I started playing, I brought in literally a drone base loop, just a drone base drum loop that I had from some stems from files, from other records. And I had this already made like freaking like really powerful drum base loop. And I brought it in and he heard it. He was like, yo, f**k no, for one of better, he said, f**k this man, this is crazy. This is not good. This is this, this ruins the song. And I’m like, you know what,  you, you, let’s go for a drink now let’s go and get drunk. We’ve done our day. Let’s just freaking blah, blah, blah.

And and then I’ll do it in my own time. Don’t worry about it. ’cause I knew, I was like, I want, I wanted to explore this.  And so we went out, we got drunk and two weeks later he came back and I said, just freaking listen to the song now. And so I went in, you know, put some pianos in there, put some strings, a string finished basically with a production that was like, started with acoustic  and  singer songwriter, really pop that went into this drum bass freaking thing in the end, jungle, you know, whatever, drum bass.

And either Drew stood there and he cried. And then we sent that song. And that same day, basically we got a call saying, you know, this band really wants to record this song. And we had a lot of people who wanted to record this. But yeah, so it was, the process was really just  talking  about life,  not thinking about what you are doing, just, you know, talking. And that became everything. And after that, how  would I put this song across and make it really powerful and just like  out of this world in a way, just not something that’s just  bland.

And so it became this record that you heard before, the click my finger. Yeah.
