My obligation when writing for the masses. Okay. Now, there might be some of you out there that might be thinking, you know, Hey Rob, stop being so positive. But it’s just, you know, there are levels of being positive, there’s like being overly positive, and then there’s being just a little bit positive. But I just think that you can throw a little bit of positivity, whether it’s like 1% or a hundred percent into every song, and it’ll help us out. It’ll help everybody out. So, my obligation, my personal obligation, you don’t have to go down this road if you don’t want to, but this is just for me, I write from a place of positivity always.
I, if ever I get into a situation where the session is turning out to be a negative writing session, where it’s just like writing from a place of negativity. I need to push it a little bit more into the positive spin. or at least, you know, if I’m not hitting you over the head with the message, at least you get some sort of positive spin to the message. You get your own interpretation, your own positive interpretation to the message. So that’s what I’m looking for, like just some sort of thing that’s just like, you know, in a lot of songs, here’s a problem.
Here’s how we can fix it, without being too heavy handed on there. So I do write from a place of positivity, that’s always where I start out from, helping each other out. I love to write a song that is gonna be useful to somebody down the road, for sure. showing people that there’s a silver lining, like that’s something where, that’s the 1% of positivity right there, you know, where it’s a silver lining song where there’s a lot of things going on, there’s a lot of darkness, there’s a lot of troubles, there’s a lot of, you know, trials and just like, if you can just show that there’s just like that little light at the end of the tunnel, you know, that sort of thing where it’s just that it is possible in some small way or a large way, whatever, just a silver lining is, is a great, great thing to do in a place of positivity.
showing people that they’re not alone. That’s another great one for sure. That’s one thing that I like to, to do when I write a song is to just say, you know, oh, you feel this way, I feel this way too, and you’re not alone.
And there’s a lot of people that do feel alone. So again, if you can help people out that way, it’s great. I try to lift people up for sure, not just in songwriting, but in life all the time. I’m, I’m always trying to just, you know, cheer people up and make people happy as much as I can. This is why my shirt is the panda Bear with lasers coming outta the eyes and, in space like that is me to a to a T right there.
just I feel, you know, like I’m this big dude that just, doesn’t take life too seriously, and I try to lift people up and just try to make people smile always. So try to lift people up in your songs as well. I love it. I love, love, love this. When people tell me that I’ve written a song, that has helped them out through a tough time or a tough situation rather than the opposite, you know, I, I just can’t imagine receiving that message that, oh, that song that You wrote actually put me further into a darker state, you know, like, I just, that would kill me.
I think I would probably quit the music business if, if that ever happened. So I’m always looking for the opposite to happen as well. And I think you guys are too. I, I, I think, you know, there’s definitely, you know, songs that you can write about things that you’re going through, but just there’s a, there’s a, a, a slight way to do, you know, ever, ever so slightly that silver lining that, that if you can. But yeah, if, if I write something that is putting someone in further into a downward spiral, that’s the last thing that I want, and that’s hopefully the last thing that you guys want as well. Eminem, why is empowerment such an important topic?
Yeah. Why is it, it has the power to make serious change in this world for the better. Absolutely. Absolutely. If there’s a problem, you know, that’s out there and you write a song and it gets caught on, and a lot of people listen to it, it can make some serious, serious change. Absolutely. it helps people exceed their own expectations too, making them realize that they can not only do it, but do it better than they ever thought they could.
You know, I think of so many songs out there, like, born This Way by Lady Gaga, just, you know, how people realize that it’s okay to be a certain way or it’s, it’s okay to live your life a certain way or whatever. It’s just like, you know, it gives them power and, and makes them realize that they can go out there and tackle the world much better than they ever could before. it makes people more mindful as well, you know, realizing what others are going through.
Let’s talk about Fight the Power Public Enemy. how old was I when that came out? Like 17, 18, right around there? I was growing up in the, like, the safest place in Canada, and I had no clue of what was going on with police brutality around the world, particularly in the States. and just, you know, not everybody getting a fair deal on things. I had no idea of anything like this. And then I heard Fight the power, and it made me realize, my God, there’s other things that are happening in this world that I have no clue about. just, you know, so definitely it made people more mindful.
It opened up what was going on, it in order to make changes, and unfortunately, we’re still going through a lot of things. You know, I think about George Floyd and just like all the, the craziness that that goes on in this world that we still need more music like this to just really sort of shake us up and, and realize what’s going on throughout the world. So it makes you more mindful realizing what others are going through. it paves the way for future leaders. You know, when you write an empowering song, you are kind of handing the torch off to someone, not that you’re, you know, you’re not gonna be empowered after that.
It’s kind of like more like you’re, you’re, you’re lighting their torch from your torch, and so spreading the fire. And that’s a great thing. If you can write a song that spreads that fire and creates a movement and makes people feel better about their lives and makes positive change in this world. Yes, that’s a great, great thing, amazing thing. it has the power to inspire people to do great things. Absolutely. Making others Dream beyond where they ever thought possible. It’s kind of the same as, as as my point number two, but just like, you know, it’s a, a slightly different take on there.
It has the power to inspire people to do great things. Wouldn’t you love to write a song that has the power to inspire people to do great things? I’m, I’m down for that. Totally. it helps to empower yourself in the process as well. When you empower another person, you impact the world and ultimately yourself, though, it’s all a win-win situation. There’s nothing wrong with writing an empowerment an an empowering song from the position of strength.
Amazing. okay, here’s some fantastic empowerment themes, and ladies and gentlemen, if you want to take a screenshot of this when we’re done with this page here, there’s some amazing themes and you can just like, use this as your, your starting point for coming up with all sorts of songs. So here we go. whole, yes, female empowerment. I Am all about that. Bring that on. More and more of that in this world. Please never end with female empowerment, please.
So many things need to change there. self-love and self-expression. Holding yourself in high regard, being invincible. Why not being confident writing an amazing anthem for those who are ostracized and or marginalized. Yes, please. More of that. Believing and being proud in yourself. Standing up to the world around you, making a change in this world.
Getting through a tough time in life, finding the light in the dark, standing up after being knocked down. Being proud of how you look, how you talk, how you walk, how you dress, how you act, how you eat, even knowing that you’re not alone. Knowing that there’s others just like you. Not letting anyone else tell you how you should live your life.
My personal favorite, telling someone where to go for sure. That can be fun. Not letting the demons inside your head take control. It’s okay to be different. Letting go of the fear of failure, how lucky we all are and so many more.
So there it is. If you want to take a picture of that with your phones, I’ll just keep that up there for a few seconds. but there’s some great, great places that you could all start from. You could write a song about each one of these, you know, and then when you’re done at the end, go back and start writing it all over again, and you start writing these songs. It’s inevitable that one of these songs is gonna land somewhere because people need these types of songs. They definitely need these types of songs in many different environments.
