Course Introduction

CHARLIE DORE & MATILDA THORPE’S IMPROBABLE WORKSHOP

USING IMPROVISATION TO ACCESS YOUR MOST ORIGINAL IDEAS, SACK YOUR INNER CRITIC AND HACK INTO YOUR SUBCONSCIOUS TO STEAL ALL THE BEST BITS FOR YOUR FINEST SONGS.

This day is designed for songwriters who want to challenge themselves and are prepared to explore and experiment with different ways of working which are the absolute antithesis of formula.  There’s no right or wrong, no reviews, no prizes – just a day we hope will help you blast through your preconceptions to access your most original ideas. The very nature of improvisation dictates that it happens in the moment, so this session is a one-off where we invite you to experiment, to relish the freedom to come up with a terrible song in order to come up with something great later on. To put yourself in an environment where you can completely accept all the unconscious stuff that comes to you from the inner workings of your brilliant mind. How you use it afterwards is down to you! Be prepared to fail gloriously – you’re in safe hands.

Some of our most creative work is actually achieved when we take our hands off the wheel for a while. When you allow yourself to stop trying so hard, a strange thing happens. Your brain carries on without you…

There’s a goldmine of unique ideas waiting quietly in your subconscious – and with a little encouragement and a experienced guide they could be working for you to give you a brilliantly clever angle you didn’t even know you had in you. Robin Williams called it The Bing Moment. Literally when your brain lights up, Bing! and you run with that idea, because it feels right.

Matilda and Charlie have many years of improvisation experience between them, both as performers in their own right and co-founders of London West End comedy-impro venue The Hurricane Club and as mentors and teachers.

“We don’t promise you’ll end the day having written your first No 1 but we confidently predict you’ll know a lot more about where to dig for the good stuff, the real gold – and in the process we guarantee there’ll be several revelations you could never have expected… and along the way, a lot of hilarity. “

*Bring an instrument if you play one. If not, just an elasticated brain will be fine.
